The adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has changed firm innovation by making it possible to search for, create, retain, recombine, and transfer knowledge in new ways. This paper proposes and empirically examines the effects of AI adoption on firm innovation performance - innovation volume as well as innovation speed. We further examine how both effects are influenced by pertinent AI regulatory support. Using data of the U.S. medical device industry from 2010 to 2020, we find that AI adoption positively influences firm product innovation performance through both innovation volume and speed. Moreover, AI regulatory support positively moderates both relationships. The paper contributes to the emerging literature on AI in strategic management, furthering our understanding of how AI adoption and AI regulatory support affect firm innovation performance.
Yan Bai (白琰) is an innovation scholar interested in how Artificial Intelligence (AI) diffusion recasts the distribution and path of innovation in the society, and how different actors sort themselves into the innovation opportunities. She is specialized in data-driven innovation in the context of business organizations and research communities in Healthcare. In her research, she combines quantitative and qualitative methods. Currently, she is a Ph.D. candidate in Barcelona at ESADE Business School, Institute of Innovation and Knowledge. Prior to joining ESADE, she received her bachelor's in financial economics and applied mathematics from Peking University. She is also coordinating "AI convocatoria", a project for using Large Language Models (LLMs) to transform the way we analyze qualitative and quantitative data (particularly, their metadata) in the social sciences.
